Motion in Bern: Short-term employment of teachers should count as professional experience

In concrete terms, the motion members demand that an employment contract of less than three weeks be counted as professional experience. This is important for the classification of the salaries of new or returning teachers, as is apparent from the motion text. Due to the teacher shortage, taking on substitute positions must also be as attractive as possible.

In its response on Monday, the Bernese government council countered that the scheme for teachers is already generous compared to cantonal employees. But he also confirmed that short-term replacements contribute to the stability of the education system. Moreover, taking short-term employment into account would not cost the canton much, according to the government council.

Because professional experience only affects wages if it amounts to a full year for new jobs or half a year for previous jobs. It was said that many such short assignments had to be completed in order to receive more pay.

The government council is therefore prepared to accept the request as a postulate. According to the cabinet, it must first be investigated whether the minimum period of three weeks should be completely abolished or shortened. Parliament will still decide on the proposal.
