The SVP is putting pressure on the Federal Council and Parliament. Given the many migrants traveling illegally to Switzerland and the relatively high number of asylum applications, they call for the reintroduction of systematic border controls.

Last week the party launched a petition to this effect. Now the SVP is going even further. SVP campaign leader Marcel Dettling (42) announced to Blick that a popular initiative would be launched if politicians did not meet the SVP’s demands.

Initiative text is being edited

“It is incomprehensible that the Federal Council is not doing anything here,” says Dettling. Especially because other countries have been carrying out border controls for years. In mid-October, Germany temporarily introduced stationary controls at the borders with Poland, the Czech Republic and Switzerland. However, these do not take place systematically. Moreover, according to the police union, they have not yet led to a significant decrease in the number of asylum seekers and migrants.

“If the petition to the Federal Council and Parliament has no effect, the people must decide,” says the National Council of Schwyz, justifying the initiative plans. “A mechanism is needed whereby systematic border controls are applied when illegal immigration becomes excessive.” There is no concrete initiative text yet, but it is already being considered.

The Minister of Asylum does not see that the conditions have been met

The SVP has been calling for the reintroduction of border controls since the beginning of this year. The right-wing party also campaigned for this in 2015, at the time of the European refugee crisis. However, the Federal Council currently does not see the conditions for introducing systematic controls. This is only legally possible if there is a serious threat to public order or if internal security is not guaranteed, Asylum Minister Elisabeth Baume-Schneider recently said in the National Council. And from the government’s perspective, this requirement does not currently exist.
