“Madam Captain Yvette Estermann,” was the headline in the “Luzerner Zeitung” in the summer – and provided information about the future appointment of the outgoing SVP National Councilor: The 56-year-old has officially been a captain in the Swiss army since June 16 – from 2024, the doctor of medicine will be appointed by law as an army chaplain. The article also showed that Estermann has been studying theology at the Reformed faculty of the University of Bern for three years and wants to work as a Reformed minister from 2027.

This information irritates the top reformer from Zurich, Michel Müller (59). Before the Reformed Synod, which meets in Bern until Tuesday, Müller submitted an interpellation with uncomfortable questions: “How is it that a theology student can already become an army chaplain? What church recommended her despite her lack of degree and especially despite her lack of ordination?”

Estermann, who inspected NATO’s external border in the Baltic states together with parliamentarians from the Foreign Policy Committee on Friday, tells SonntagsBlick: “The pastor and a theologian from Zurich recommended me.”

Departures and conflicts

The Estermann case is not the only personality issue that is the subject of discussion among Reformed people. The abrupt dismissal of lawyer Lilian Bachmann (51) from the highest body of the Swiss Reformed Church is also a subject of discussion. After a few months in office, Bachmann threw in the towel. The reason, according to the press release: different opinions on the future strategic direction of the Evangelical Reformed Church of Switzerland (EKS).

Bachmann does not want to reveal exactly what this means. The lawyer from Lucerne remains steadfastly silent about her motives to SonntagsBlick.

The dismissal may be related to an event at Reformed Media, where Bachmann is a board member. As SonntagsBlick knows from a reliable source, the EKS has received a complaint about alleged abuse of power in the reformed media. Neither EKS nor Bachmann would comment on the complaint.
