Attack on the Federal Council will embarrass the Greens again: they will not get a green solution

Only in the open: Gerhard Andrey is the only Green available for the attack on the Federal Council.

This time they wanted to do everything better. The Greens wanted to learn from failed candidacies for the Federal Council in the past. Everything should be more professional. More strategic. More successful.

The registration deadline for the final attempt expired at noon on Friday. And now it is clear that the Greens have once again failed in their aim.

Rejection after rejection

The eco party has been preparing the hoped-for coup for a long time. The search committee spoke to sixty valuable people and twenty potential candidates ended up on the party’s internal shortlist. Everything to finally steal one of the two seats of the Federal Council from the FDP.

But the huge defeat in the parliamentary elections has put a major damper on the Greens’ plans. In their historic victory in 2019, they missed the momentum due to long hesitation. This time it wasn’t even on her side.

And so rejection after rejection followed from our own ranks. There is only one person left who sacrifices himself as Winkelried for the party, knowing full well that he has no chance in the Federal Council elections on December 13: Freiburg National Councilor Gerhard Andrey (47).

Half-hearted attack

He’s the right man at the wrong time. Andrey is not a backbencher and certainly has qualities of the Federal Council. The bilingual Freiburg native grew up as a farmer’s son and completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter and later became a computer scientist. Today he is an IT entrepreneur with his own company that employs over 200 people in six Swiss locations. Andrey is considered a pragmatic politician who is respected across party lines. But he has only been on the National Council for four years. One thing is certain: a political heavyweight looks different.

There was still a collective sigh of relief within the party when Andrej announced his candidacy on Tuesday. Now you can save yourself the ‘effort’ of putting yourself forward as a candidate, it was said behind closed doors. Instead of the party presenting a selection to the Federal Assembly and the public, the most promising minds hid in the cochlea. The Glarus Councilor of States Mathias Zopfi (39), the State Councilor of St. Gall Franziska Ryser (32) or the Zurich Bastien Girod (42): they are clearly too ashamed to sacrifice themselves for the hopeless project.

“Bad Karma”

A shame for a party that has been preparing for the attack on the FDP for months and has always emphasized how many good personnel it has in its quiver. The Greens’ communication in recent days also looked anything but professional. A media conference was planned, but suddenly no one knew anything about it, and it was eventually postponed because all the lights in the Federal Palace had to be turned off because of the movie “Rendez-vous Bundesplatz”. Mitte President Gerhard Pfister (61) could not resist a swipe and mocked X: “Bad karma.”

The other parties shook their heads at the tactics of the Federal Council of the Greens. While the SP candidates are lining up, the Greens can make a fuss and persuade someone to throw their hat into the ring. Of course: the starting point is different. The vacant SP seat is uncontested by all other parties. But if even the eco party doesn’t really believe in itself, who else does?

The Greens no longer wear Birkenstock sandals or home-knit wool sweaters. Her Federal Council strategy still seems handmade.
