The A1 motorway will be expanded to at least six lanes between Bern and Zurich, as well as Lausanne and Geneva. After the National Council, the transport politicians in the Council of States also agree with this. The committee voted 10 to 3 in favor of a proposal that SVP Councilor Erich Hess (42) submitted this spring.
“With this acceptance, the Commission confirms the need to expand the A1,” the press release said. Continued expansion of the A1 is already part of the strategic national road development programme.
There is criticism from the left. The SP writes on X that the decision increases traffic and damages the environment. The Swiss Transport Club (VCS) writes in a press release about the “highway construction madness”. “Every time the traffic routes became congested, the problem was tackled with expansion, wider streets and more lanes,” says VCS chairman Ruedi Blumer (66). “With the effect of attracting even more traffic, the traffic jams returned a few years later and further expansion was considered.”
The National Council had already approved the initiative in September. Hess justified his motion by saying that the traffic intensity on the 410 kilometer long A1 is now much greater than before. The highway is one of the “chronically busy routes in the country.” The daily traffic jam reports prove this. And usage will continue to increase for the foreseeable future. The Federal Council led by SVP Transport Minister Albert Rösti (56) had also recommended the motion for acceptance. (brother)
