There are five comrades and one female comrade who are running for membership of the Federal Council after Alain Berset (51). The internal application deadline expired on Sunday. The six candidates have a difficult road ahead of them. The first major hurdle awaits on November 25: the SP faction will decide who gets the ticket and is officially nominated for the elections on December 13. But who has what opportunities? And who should expect what resistance?
Look determines the layout order. And because the chosen person will most likely take over the health department of Berset on January 1, in the form of a leaflet. After all, medicine will soon be part of the daily life of Berset’s successor. So it is high time to deal with it intensively.
The Vaudois is a stimulant with twice the dose of caffeine. Always on the go and always coming up with new ideas. In the National Council, since 2004, the political scientist has long been something like the Ritalin of the SP faction: ensuring that comrades are focused at the crucial moment and press the right button.
Scope of application and operation: Anyone who takes Nordmann with him gets figures, facts, arguments and decisions. The effect occurs very quickly. It is also easy to tolerate and even ordinary people appreciate its reliability.
Risks and side effects: In some cases, allergic reactions have been observed in French and young group members. You should also be careful if you overdose as you can easily become dizzy. And in general the question arises whether the SP needs a stimulant from a laboratory in Western Switzerland.
Basel was intended to be an antidepressant. His region was disappointed in the last elections and has been waiting for a seat in the Federal Council for a long time. Initially he was considered the favorite, but the air is getting thinner for him. Perhaps echinacea alone is sufficient: it is good for a cold, but it does not help with something more serious like Corona.
Scope of application and operation: In the National Council until 2020, Jans knows the Federal Palace inside and out. The same goes for the party of which he was vice president. So far he has had little to do with health policy. But as district president of the pharmaceutical metropolis of Basel, that must be in his DNA. There he was also able to gain managerial experience – an additional advantage.
Risks and side effects: The powerful farmers’ lobby is too sensitive to him, but in the SP Jans’ impact would diminish. He could have a hard time there, especially since Evi Allemann, another member of a cantonal government, is a candidate.
Always friendly and cheerful, Matthias Aebischer’s sunny character puts you in a good mood – like a vitamin D supplement. However, as an education and sports politician, he usually stays on the edge of the spotlight. But it is well tolerated and does not hurt anyone.
Scope of application and operation: As a former TV man, Aebischer has a good appearance. That never hurts in politics. His charm is particularly well received by his colleagues in the French parliamentary group. At the same time, young fathers and self-proclaimed househusbands are welcome among socialists.
Risks and side effects: Aebischer is seen by his own faction as having little impact. Moreover, as a Bernese he is having a hard time anyway, not only because of the Bernese Federal Councilor Albert Rösti (56), but because the Bernese Evi Allemann, as a woman, is almost considered a candidate on the SP ticket. The fact that Aebischer has no managerial experience costs him extra Tarmed points.
The Bern government member is the only woman in the race to succeed Alain Berset. She is trying to become a federal councilor for the second time, but now has a much better chance of getting the ticket. Because the SP cannot afford not to nominate a woman. This makes Allemann a kind of stomach protector, without whom it simply doesn’t work in a race with so many medicated, er, candidates.
Scope of application and mechanism of action: As a team player, Allemann prefers to work in the background rather than on the big stage. Your goal is to find the best solution to a problem together with everyone involved. It allows other medications to have their full effect without causing too much damage. This also appeals to the stomachs of the middle class.
Risks and side effects: Allemann served on the National Council for a long time. However, since 2018 it has had an impact on the cantonal government of Bern. In the Federal Palace, where she now wants to be used again, her name has faded slightly. That is the handicap of these types of medicines: they are important, but little known.
The effect is strong, but the side effects can also be severe: Daniel Jositsch is reminiscent of an antibiotic. The Zurich resident has continued his candidacy. And this after he wanted to become a federal councilor last year – and provoked strong defensive reactions at the time, especially among the women in the parliamentary group.
Scope of application and operation: Even though the Council of States of Zurich does not really have any leadership experience, he is still entrusted as a federal councilor. As a law professor, he has the legal knowledge in-house and – as a pleasant bonus – he is very popular among the population. His political profile on the right-wing edge of the SP makes him the favorite drug of the bourgeoisie.
Risks and side effects: There are incompatibilities against Jositsch, especially in his own camp, reducing his chances of getting a place on the SP ticket. The bad thing is that he sometimes puts his interests above those of the party. This makes him unpredictable to some extent. A trait that is not welcome in potential federal council members, and not even when it comes to medication. But if he makes the final cut, elections are likely.
At the age of 39, the natural remedy from Graubünden is still in the clinical trial phase by political standards. Pult speaks (and dreams) in three languages, has dual Swiss-Italian nationality and would like to keep his two passports even if he is elected.
Scope of application and effect: Pult would significantly rejuvenate the Federal Council. This is especially well received by young SP players. Although he has only been politicking in Bern for four years, he is already chairman of the Transport Committee. It is considered promising, but others point out that its effect has not yet been sufficiently proven.
Risks and side effects: That can also be a disadvantage. If he were elected, he would be the same age as then federal councilor Alain Berset (51), but he has significantly less experience. But the most serious side effect is its origin. While the pharmaceutical city of Basel has been waiting for a seat in the Federal Council for more than fifty years, rural herbs are already sufficiently represented in the Federal Council.
