SVP does not give up: Parliament must start a special asylum debate again

The SVP cannot drop out of the election campaign. Next week she wants to convene Parliament for a special session on asylum – again.

Just a month ago, the SVP convened an extraordinary session to discuss asylum policy. Now she is again calling for discussion of the new asylum practice for Afghan women – unless the Federal Council acts on its own initiative.

Urgent measures are necessary due to the dramatic asylum situation, says SVP faction leader Thomas Aeschi (44). He therefore submitted a request for an extraordinary hearing to the National Council office.

This can be demanded by a quarter of the members of a council. The SVP meets this criterion. The municipal office determines the time and agenda of the meeting. The extraordinary hearing is usually linked to an ordinary hearing. The next one will take place from December 4 to 22.

The SVP is putting pressure on the Federal Council

But the SVP is too late. She wants Parliament to meet as early as next week. In concrete terms, the National Council and the Council of States will discuss two identical demands from the ranks of the SVP and the FDP on Thursday, November 2. They call on the Federal Council to reverse the new asylum practice for Afghan women. Since July 17, their asylum applications have generally no longer been rejected. The reason for this is the persecution of women and girls in Afghanistan by the Taliban.

The extraordinary session must be convened if the Federal Council does not decide itself to change the new asylum practice for Afghan women during its next regular meeting next Wednesday, as the SVP writes. It is unlikely that the Federal Council will allow itself to be pressured.

It’s not even Parliament’s turn yet

It is understood that the National Council office will decide on Monday whether and – if so – how the SVP’s request will be granted. According to President of the National Council, Martin Candinas (43, center), an extraordinary session on the above-mentioned proposals can only take place if the Federal Council has responded. That has not been the case so far.

In addition, the Council of States office must make a similar decision before the hearing, Candinas said when asked. The date of an extraordinary session must be determined at the coordination conference – the committee composed of the National Council and the offices of the Council of States.

Parallel to its call for a special session, the SVP has also started an online petition. In doing so, she demands “to introduce border controls, halt change in practice for Afghan women and stop asylum abuse and smuggling gangs.” (SDA/lha)
