The Greens suffered a bitter defeat on Sunday.

The Greens are licking wounds. The party lost five seats on Sunday. The party’s poor performance is likely to be discussed at a parliamentary group meeting on Friday. And last but not least there is the question: despite the defeat, are you prepared to succeed Minister of the Interior Alain Berset (51) in the elections for the Federal Council? So far, there are six SP candidates – five men and one woman – who have publicly expressed their interest.

Particularly since the election results were corrected on Wednesday, the Greens have emphasized that they achieved the second-best election result in the party’s history. Chairman of the Green Party Balthasar Glättli (51) wrote on X that “practically speaking” they are a 10 percent party. And on Sunday, Aline Trede (40), leader of the Green Party, said the party was leaning towards participating in the Federal Council elections in December.

Also critical voices

But critical voices soon emerged within the party. “It would be completely wrong at this point to try to take a seat in the Federal Council away from the SP.” This way you only weaken yourself, former Green Party chairman Ueli Leuenberger (71) said on Monday. Several members also see it this way and said they aim not to participate in the Federal Council elections in December.
