The initiators will light their fireworks next Friday. They will then submit the signatures for the popular initiative “For a restriction of fireworks” to the Federal Chancellery in Bern. The initiative committee announced this on Friday.
This will bring their desires to the attention of the people. For a popular initiative to go to the polls, 100,000 valid signatures are needed in Switzerland.
Those responsible do not want to announce exactly how many signatures they have been able to collect next week, Corinne Meister (48) said on Friday when asked. The computer scientist from Bollingen SG is on the people’s initiative committee.
This calls for a ban on private fireworks that make noise in the future. Fireworks are old-fashioned and harmful to the environment, animals and people. The initiators only want to allow loud fireworks on national occasions. “Light shows, laser and drone spectacles are just as beautiful without causing noise or smell,” the initiators write on their website.
The master’s animals are also particularly bothered by the noise of the pounding on August 1 or New Year’s Eve. She keeps chickens, four cats and a dog. “My animals think the fireworks are anything but great,” she told Blick in July.
One baby in particular is bothered by the sound of banging: “Amy always panics when there is banging,” says Meister. The cat doesn’t know what to do with itself, is stressed and restless. And this despite the fact that masters and their animals live in a rural idyll.
Masters and their fellow activists started collecting signatures in May last year. The committee says it is supported by environmental and animal welfare organizations. These include Swiss Animal Protection (STS), Wildlife Protection Switzerland, Animal in Law Foundation, Swiss Cynological Society, Pro Natura, Greenpeace Switzerland and the Noise League. (oco)
