Filippo Leutenegger wants to become FDP leader of Zurich.

The FDP suffered electoral losses not only at the national level, but also in the canton of Zurich. The liberal from Zurich can defend his five mandates for the National Council, but the seat of the Council of States has permanently disappeared after Regine Sauter (57) withdraws. In addition, there is still fire in the roof because of the controversial list link with the SVP in the elections for the National Council. In addition, current party chairman Hans-Jakob Boesch (44) announced his resignation after the elections in the summer.

So far, there is only one application on the table for the successor: former government council candidate Peter Grünenfelder (56) and municipal councilor Thomas Henauer from Thalwil want to lead the party in the co-presidium.

But now a liberal heavyweight is stepping into the ring. Filippo Leutenegger (70), Zurich city councilor, is now also running for the cantonal FDP presidency. Leutenegger announced on Thursday that he and his team would run for president of the FDP canton of Zurich on November 21, outside the regular procedure.

Cantonal councilor Raffaela Fehr (38) and the chairman of the Young Liberals of Switzerland, Matthias Müller (31), are running for vice-president.

The former National Council said further information would be provided at a later date.

Leutenegger has already stood for election once

The party will be led by this trio in the future. Fehr and Müller should take over the vice presidency and sit on the board. “Leutenegger’s candidacy can be interpreted as a direct response to the ambitions of Peter Grünenfelder,” the NZZ analyzes the candidacy.

These politicians need to pack their bags

There are many voices within the party that do not think a presidency under the former director of Avenir Suisse is a good idea. For example, because of his leadership style, but also because of his ‘often uncomfortable liberal views’.

By the way, Peopleegger wanted to take over the party chairmanship of the canton of Zurich almost twenty years ago. However, he then lost to Doris Fiala (66).

Filippo Leutenegger founded the talk show “Arena” on Swiss television in 1993 and was editor-in-chief and presenter until 1999. As a result, he achieved great fame outside Zurich. (SDA/rus)
