It must be made easier for people with protection status S to get to work.

The measure seems simple: the current permit requirement must be abolished and replaced by a reporting obligation. The State Political Committee of the National Council (SPK-N) wants to make it easier for people with protection status S to get to work.

The Federal Council, led by the responsible SP Justice Minister Elisabeth Baume-Schneider (59), agrees with this and recommends that Parliament adopt a corresponding motion from the Commission.

The SPK-N hopes that refugees from Ukraine – who currently live in Switzerland with protection status S – can better integrate into the labor market. She formulated her concerns in a committee motion, to which the Federal Council requested a yes vote on Thursday without further justification.

The proponents want to move forward

The majority of the SPK-N was of the opinion that the specific improvements on which their motion was based could already be achieved. Representatives of the SVP and FDP in the committee rejected the motion.

Status S is awarded to refugees from Ukraine and their immediate family members. They can immediately take a job and send their children to school. You can also travel abroad and return to Switzerland. At the end of September 2023, more than 65,700 people with status S lived in Switzerland.

In November 2022, the Federal Council decided not to revoke the S status until March 4, 2024. The Federal Council wants to decide in the coming weeks what will happen next with the S status. (SDA)
