Want to concentrate on the party leadership: Mattea Meyer and Cedric Wermuth.

In the new term, party leadership is their priority, as they said in an interview with ’20 Minutes’.

Private and political reasons spoke against this, Wermuth said in the interview published on Thursday. He and Meyer took over the party after a historic defeat and now many votes have been won back. That motivates you even more.

He is convinced that the path he has chosen is the right one and would like to continue with it. “After the shift to the right, we are now called to be an opposition party,” Wermuth emphasized.

She had been leaning towards a no for some time, but had postponed the final decision until after the elections, according to Meyer. And: “The co-presidency is currently the place where I feel comfortable and supported by our base.” She wants to continue working for a more social Switzerland. For example, the woman from Zurich wants to fight for the premium assistance initiative next year.

“Not a lifelong dream”

For Wermuth it was perhaps the last chance to become a federal councilor. “That is very possible, but it was never my lifelong dream,” said the Aargau resident when asked about it. He doesn’t know where he will be in eight years. But he’s looking forward to the part of his life away from the spotlight.

That leaves six candidacies to succeed SP federal councilor Alain Berset. So far, Basel government chairman and former national councilor Beat Jans, Graubünden national councilor Jon Pult, Bernese national councilor Matthias Aebischer, Zurich state councilor Daniel Jositsch, Vaud national councilor Roger Nordmann and Bernese government councilor and former national councilor Alderman Evi Allemann is in the running.
