Grazioli justified her resignation in a statement from the Greens on Wednesday, saying that “in recent years she has diverged from the majority of the parliamentary group and the party on important issues.” This is not sustainable for either party in the long term. Grazioli and the party would go their separate ways ‘in peace’, it is further said.
Grazioli was once considered the shining hope of the Basel Greens and served as the party’s vice president. The 38-year-old was not nominated by the Greens for the National Council elections last March. The reason for this was their commitment to the sovereignty initiative, which was announced by opponents of the Corona measures.
In Sunday’s federal elections, Green Basel councilor Maya Graf confidently won her re-election, while her party colleague Florence Brenzikofer barely managed to defend her seat in the National Council. The party’s vote loss was 8 percent, compared to an all-time high four years ago, when the party became the third strongest force in the Basel region’s representation in the National Council with 18 percent of the vote.
