The new State Secretary for Security left before taking office. The aptitude test with the current Swiss ambassador to Turkey, Jean-Daniel Ruch, failed. The Ministry of Defense (VBS) had based itself on the fact that he still had a ‘guarantee’ of six months. The next regular evaluation should not have taken place until June 2024. It should go without saying that the federal government is investigating the favorite for the position of top security official in Switzerland.

VBS boss Viola Amherd relied on the search committee, which had to identify the best candidate. But the committee, made up of our security people, was as blind as the background checkers had been for years. Ruch’s current and new employers, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the DDPS, also found nothing for a long time. Now they suddenly break up. This laissez-faire mentality is scary! No one is looking closely. Everyone depends on each other. And then sponge over it.

Amherd has averted a huge danger to Switzerland: a security chief who poses a security risk. But confidence in the newly established State Secretariat has disappeared. You wonder if we wouldn’t be able to sleep more peacefully without this. It is clear that something needs to change. But before the federal government builds a new security giant, it must improve the vetting of its top personnel.
