Majors with explosive statements: GLP’s shift to the right angers the left

GLP president Jürg Grossen fires sharply at the left – and insults SP federal councilor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider.

GLP president Jürg Grossen (54) is currently not making any friends in the left-wing camp. Apparently frustrated by his own election defeat, the Green Liberal fired on all cylinders in a ‘Nebelspalter’ podcast – and at the same time managed to win the favor of the big election winner, the SVP. But this is now in danger of becoming a bull’s-eye.

“Jürg Grossen may have to think about who exactly should choose his candidate for the Council of States in the canton of Zurich,” says SP state councilor Min Li Marti (49) on X (formerly Twitter). The Social Democrat is referring to the upcoming second round of elections in the Zurich Council of States election campaign, which is especially important for the GLP.

GLP candidate depends on the left

While the SP has already secured its seat with the re-election of Daniel Jositsch (58), GLP faction leader and Council of States candidate Tiana Moser (44) has to tremble. After the withdrawal of FDP candidate Regine Sauter (57), centrist Philipp Kutter (48) and the Green Daniel Leupi (57), SVP Landraad Gregor Rutz (51) is Moser’s toughest competitor. The Green Liberals are urgently dependent on the votes of the Left-Green Party. Otherwise your party would still not be represented in the Stöckli.

But GLP boss Grossen seems unfazed by this: the fact that Switzerland voted conservative was “not just a bad thing,” he said. “Left-wing recipes generally do not work well in the long term.” The state is often bloated and everything becomes more expensive.

Yes, Grossen even insulted SP federal councilor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider (59), describing her as “not the brightest candle on the cake” because of her asylum policy – for which he later apologized. At the same time, he turned to the election winner, the SVP, who said she had “a point” with her migration policy.

“It is not a smart strategy from the GLP”

This is not well received by the SP from Zurich: “Jürg Grossen’s statements alienated me,” says co-chair Priska Seiler Graf (55). The insult to federal councilor Baume-Schneider was not worthy of a party chairman. It is also worrying how Grossen sometimes ingratiates himself with the SVP: “Particularly on ecological and social issues, the GLP achieves nothing if it does not work for us.”

The left-wing camp in Zurich is even more likely to support GLP-Moser – to prevent SVP-Rutz. And yet: “It is not a smart strategy for the GLP to insult the SP in such a way,” says Seiler Graf. “Such statements are certainly not conducive to mobilization.” GLP candidate Moser still has viable chances in the Council of States race – not because of, but in spite of, her party chairman.
