Ifat Reshef in Aargau: Israeli ambassador visits “Jewish villages”

Israeli Ambassador Ifat Reshef and Aargau State Councilor Thierry Burkart (FDP) at the memorial service in the synagogue of Endingen AG.

The Israeli ambassador to Switzerland, who has been in office since August 2021, said it was important for her to be in touch with the Jewish communities in Switzerland. Endingen and Lengnau in the Aargauer Surbtal have a unique historical significance as the cradle of Swiss Jewry.

She is looking forward to “learning something about the history of my people and about Swiss history,” Reshef told the Keystone-SDA news agency. Thierry Burkart, State Councilor of Aargau, took part in the visit, which had been planned for some time. The chairman of the FDP Switzerland lives in Lengnau.

A cantor sang during a memorial service for the victims of the conflict in the Middle East in the synagogue of Endingen. Many innocent people have died in recent weeks, says Jules Bloch, president of the Israeli Community in Endingen, and they want to commemorate the deaths in Israel and Gaza.

Other stops included the Jewish cemetery, the Lengnau Synagogue and the Margoa Israeli retirement home in Lengnau. The program also included a tour of the building on the village square in Lengnau, where the meeting center of the “Doppeltür” association is to be built by 2025.

The concept is called ‘double door’ because before Jews in Endingen and Lengnau were given equal status, Jews and Christians had to live close to each other, usually in the same houses. These residential buildings had separate entrances.

The association wants visitors to experience the daily life of Christians and Jews in the 18th and 19th centuries in a double-door house. “Ignorance is a problem,” says publicist and Double Door board member Roy Oppenheim about the ignorance of many people. School classes are an important target group, but the house will be open to all generations.

After their expulsion from the federal cities, Swiss Jews were only allowed to settle in Endingen and Lengnau from 1776 onwards. After equality and freedom of settlement was achieved in Aargau in 1874, many Jewish families migrated to the cities. Today, only a few Jews live in Endingen and Lengnau. (SDA)
