Result in the canton of Zurich: Corona skeptic Rimoldi has no chance

Nicolas Rimoldi clearly missed the elections.

Shortly before 9:30 p.m. there was certainty. Meret Schneider (31) did not make it. The Green National Councilor has been voted out – just four years after she brought the climate elections to Bern, her political career is already over. The deselection was ‘brutally painful’, she wrote on X on Sunday evening. At the moment she just wants to ‘sink into the ground’.

It also seemed to Schneider’s colleague Katharina Prelicz-Huber (64) that her time in Bern was long over. She, who had already been voted out once, had already resigned herself to her fate. “Another life is starting for me now,” she said. But when the end result arrived, the surprise was: it was enough for Prelicz-Huber. The collapse of the Greens: this is not as big in Zurich as expected during Sunday afternoon.

The Green Liberals have to bleed for this. Your delegation shrinks from four to two seats. It’s over for the previous Judith Bellaiche (52) and Jörg Mäder (48).

While the eco camp loses, the social democrats win. The SP gets eight seats, one more than before. Following the resignation of former national councilor Angelo Barrile (47), two new SP members have reached the Federal Palace: Islam Alijaj (37), who sits in a wheelchair and fights for the rights of people with disabilities, and the queer activist and writer Anna Rosenwasser (33). Both come from the city of Zurich.

The center is also gaining ground, from one to three seats. This brings the center closer to the shrunken Greens.

In addition to the GLP and the Greens, the losers also include the Corona skeptics. It was expected that Nicolas Rimoldi (28) would have a good chance of winning a seat. But nothing came of it. The critics of the measures that emerged during the corona pandemic had no chance. Mass-Voll leader Rimoldi received just under 10,400 votes. The list connection between Mass-Voll, the other organization Aufrecht that was critical of the measures, the Swiss Democrats and the EDU turned out to be in favor of the latter party: it managed to win its first seat.

Because Zurich gained an extra seat due to population growth, the EDU gain will not come at the expense of the SVP. This remains the strongest party and manages to hold on to its ten seats. But here too there is a loser: Therese Schläpfer (64) is voted out. The FDP retains five seats.

In addition to the eighth seat in the National Council, the Zurich SP can be happy with the election of State Councilor Daniel Jositsch (58). He is clearly ahead in the Council of States race with almost 237,000 votes and is the only one elected in the first round. Behind him are Gregor Rutz (51) of the SVP and slightly further behind Regine Sauter (57, FDP) and GLP candidate Tiana Angelina Moser (44). Center candidate Philipp Kutter (48) and EPP candidate Nik Gugger (53) were defeated. It is still unclear who will participate in the second round.

Council of States: Daniel Jositsch, second seat vacant

National Council: Gregor Rutz, Alfred Heer, Thomas Matter, Mauro Tuena, Barbara Steinemann, Benjamin Fischer, Martin Haab, Nina Fehrüssel, Bruno Walliser, Martin Hübscher (all SVP), Jacqueline Badran, Mattea Meyer, Priska Seiler Graf, Min Li Marti, Fabian Molina , Céline Widmer, Islam Alijaj, Anna Rosenwasser (all SP), Tiana Angelina Moser, Martin Bäumle, Corina Gredig, Barbara Schaffner (all GLP), Balthasar Glättli, Marionna Schlatter, Bastien Girod, Katharina Prelicz-Huber (all Greens), Andri Silberschmidt, Regine Sauter, Hans-Peter Portmann, Beat Walti, Bettina Balmer (all FDP), Philipp Kutter, Nicole Barandun, Yvonne Bürgin (all middle), Nik Gugger (EPP), Erich Vontobel (EDU).
