Biologist, lawyer, teacher: these women and men are new to parliament

class=”sc-29f61514-0 icZBHN”>

1/4
The day of the decision has arrived: Switzerland elected a new parliament on Sunday.

The former Juso president

Cédric Wermuth, Fabian Molina, Tamara Funiciello – and now David Roth (38): With the election of the trade unionist from Lucerne, four former Juso presidents will probably sit on the National Council at the same time from December (provided that the previous presidents are all re-elected) . Roth was elected Wermuth’s successor to the leadership of the Young Socialists in 2011 and held this position until 2014. Since 2015, he has been chairman of the SP canton of Lucerne and long-time vice-chairman of the national party. He already ran for the National Council in 2011, 2015 and 2019 – he has now passed on his fourth attempt.

The medical entrepreneur

Simon Michel (FDP) is an entrepreneur and now also a national councilor.

Simon Michel (46), entrepreneur and candidate for the National Council for the FDP of Solothurn, enters the parliament in Bern for the canton of Solothurn. Michel heads the second generation of the medical technology company Ypsomed, headquartered in Burgdorf BE, a family business with approximately 2,000 employees worldwide. Michel succeeds the retiring National Councilor Kurt Fluri in the Liberal Party.

The IV lawyer

Rémy Wyssmann (SVP) from Solothurn works as a lawyer.

A new face comes to Bern from the canton of Solothurn: Rémy Wyssmann (56). During the election campaign, the SVP member praised himself as a ‘politician with teeth’ and without lobby connections. He previously served on the cantonal council of Solothurn and is vice president of the cantonal party. He works professionally as a lawyer, specializing in liability and insurance law. One of his areas of expertise: disability insurance (IV). Wyssmann is fighting alongside people whose IV applications have been rejected.

The biologist

What a surprise! In Lucerne it was not the SVP but the SP that won a seat at the expense of the Green Liberals. The winner is Hasan Candan (38) from the city of Lucerne. The qualified sports scientist, business scientist and biologist works at the environmental protection organization Pro Natura and is responsible for biodiversity policy there. The father of a son and amateur football player has been politicking in the Lucerne canton council since 2011.

The first Nidwalden woman in the National Council

Lucky winner: Regina Durrer-Knobel, the new Nidwaldner Mitte councilor.

It is a first for the canton of Nidwalden: for the first time a woman, Regina Durrer-Knobel (52), has reached the National Council. The cantonal parliamentarian takes away the only seat of the National Council of Nidwalden from the SVP. Their previous representative in Bern, Peter Keller (52), no longer participated. Durrer is vice-rector of a vocational school and also teaches there. She lives with her husband and three teenagers in Ennetmoos.

The communications professional

Benjamin Mühlemann (FDP) is the new member of the Glaruse Council of States.

Benjamin Mühlemann (44) has already updated his website. «22. October 2023: Election for the Council of States,” it says in the “Career” chapter. The Glarus FDP politician has been a government councilor since 2014 and was initially responsible for education and for finance and health care for two years. He once studied journalism and worked as a journalist for several years before switching to communications.
