The Gasthof St. Meinrad in Einsiedeln SZ is located on the Etzel Pass, part of the Jacobsweg. In the summer, two unlikely pilgrims came to the restaurant with hearty, refined cuisine: German AfD leader Alice Weidel (44) and former federal councilor Ueli Maurer (72, SVP). “The meeting served as a political exchange,” Weidel’s spokesperson told SonntagsBlick. He does not want to reveal details, Ueli Maurer left a request unanswered.
The leadership of Maurer’s party also does not want to comment on his conversation with Weidel. However, a spokeswoman emphasizes: “The SVP Switzerland does not maintain contacts with foreign parties.” In 2016, party sponsor and father Christoph Blocher (83) attached great importance to not having to appear directly next to Weidel’s AfD colleague Alexander Gauland (82) in the SRF “Arena”. And when journalists discovered Alice Weidel at the SVP’s Albisgütli conference in January this year, she left the party event. However, she is a welcome guest at the summer party ‘Weltwoche’ organized by SVP publicist Roger Köppel (58).
Weidel’s proximity to the SVP is not the only question that arises. It still remains unclear what the alleged plan to attack Weidel’s family in Willerzell SZ entails, where the AfD leader lives with her partner, filmmaker Sarah Bossard (41), and two children.
According to Weidel’s spokesperson, a “safety-related incident” occurred in Willerzell on September 23. The AfD later claimed that Weidel was staying in a ‘safe house’ and had to cancel an election campaign appointment. In reality she was on a family holiday in Mallorca.
According to information from the Schwyz cantonal police, the investigations have now been completed: “To protect everyone involved, no information will be provided.” Weidel has not filed a criminal complaint. “She didn’t think a complaint against an unknown person would be very effective,” Weidel’s spokesperson told SonntagsBlick.
Einsiedler Mitte councilor Alois Gmür (68) criticizes Kapo Schwyz’s sparse information policy. “The public has the right to know what happened,” Gmür said. “If the Kapo resist, it opens the door for speculation. It cannot be that the AfD makes contradictory statements about the danger in Einsiedeln – and that the Schwyz authorities do not inform the public.”
There is also strong criticism from Baden-Württemberg, where Weidel has her constituency. Anti-Semitism officer Michael Blume (47) tells SonntagsBlick: “German and Swiss authorities are repeatedly played against each other, especially in the fight against anti-Semitism, fascism and disinformation. There is now even a suspicion that an AfD politician was allowed to stage productions from Switzerland. I once again ask our Swiss friends to improve cooperation and exchange of information against conspiracy myths. It cannot continue like this.”
