Federal councilor Karin Keller-Sutter (59) has had enough. The Federal Ministry of Finance (EFD), of which she is head, has filed a criminal complaint against unknown persons with the Federal Public Prosecution Service. Due to suspicion of fraud. The FDF confirmed a corresponding notification at Blick’s request.

The reason for the intervention of the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office is advertisements circulating online. A photo of federal councilor Keller-Sutter is used. Particularly insidious: the ad is designed as an interview.

False advertising promises high profits

The text promotes an investment platform supposedly developed by the federal government that promises high profits. Only: the ‘interview’ with the federal councilor never took place, it is not real. It’s a “fake ad for a fraudulent investment site,” as the National Center for Cybersecurity (NCSC) warns.

But that is not enough. The FDF is currently preparing a second criminal complaint against unknown persons, which will be filed shortly. This concerns fraud, coercion and violation of the Weapons Act.

Fraud emails in the name of the Minister of Finance

The second criminal complaint focuses on fraudulent emails sent in the name of the Minister of Finance. The letters give the impression – at least at first glance – as if they are very official correspondence. For example, the official logo of the Swiss Confederation is included in the letterhead.

Only: the content of the electronic mail is cool. The recipient is threatened with initiating criminal proceedings or even with imprisonment if certain amounts of money are not transferred within a tight period.

Faking such letters and advertisements with famous people is a popular scam. The fraudsters abuse well-known names to defraud Swiss internet users with the prospect of quick money or with intimidation. For their scam, the criminals also falsify the design of well-known media such as Blick – even though they have nothing to do with it. You can submit such reports directly to the NCSC at any time via a form.
