Despite all the efforts of the election campaign, social media only plays a small role in politics

SVP provocateur Andreas Glarner (61) recently caused red heads again with a fake video of the Green National Councilor Sibel Arslan (43) – until the civil court of Basel-Stadt pulled the plug on him. Other candidates also try out more or less successful advertising videos on X (formerly Twitter) or Instagram during the election campaign.

However, there is a small downside to the case: social media still plays a marginal role in political decisions. This is evident from the first results of a research project by the Center for Democracy Aarau that has been running since June 2023.

Older people hardly receive information via social media

Older voters in particular, who make up a large part of the voting body, hardly receive information via Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube or Tiktok, the Aarau Center for Democracy (ZDA) said in a statement on Thursday.

However, things look different for boys. Instagram in particular is also actively used for political information purposes. “All in all, there is a clear contrast in the information behavior of the generations. While digital natives also obtain their information on digital platforms such as YouTube and Instagram or sites such as Watson, older voters still rely on radio, TV and newspapers,” said project officer Gabriel Hofmann in the statement.

Poster remains the leader

According to the ZDA, this also applies to political advertisements. In the perception of political advertising, the political poster is still the leader and digital advertising is only secondary.

With the research project “Swiss Direct Democracy in the 21st Century (DDS21)”, the ZDA investigates the reasons for participation and decisions of voters after each federal vote. The ZDA is a scientific research center supported by the University of Zurich, the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland, the Canton of Aargau and the city of Aarau. (dba/SDA)
