463,000 in the first half of the year: fewer trucks drive through the Alps

Fewer trucks crossed the Alps in the first half of 2023 than in the corresponding period last year. (subject image)

Nearly three-quarters of the goods were transported by rail in the first half of 2023, the Federal Transport Agency (BAV) announced on Thursday. The rail share was 0.9 percentage points lower than in the first half of 2022. Only about half of all freight trains reached their destination on time.

According to the federal government, the decline is mainly due to economic development in Europe. Due to lower production, especially in the steel, chemical and automotive industries, demand for transalpine freight transport services has fallen.

Despite the decline, the resettlement goal set out in the federal constitution is still far away. The number of trucks should therefore be reduced to 650,000 journeys per year. (SDA)
