Due to the weather, the second day of the Swiss Air Force’s traditional aviation shooting competition at Axalp BE is canceled. As the Federal Ministry of Defense, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS) has announced, the flight demonstrations and training cannot take place on Thursday.
On Wednesday, the Swiss Air Force demonstrated its capabilities at Axalp. In the Alpine basin above Lake Brienz, several thousand spectators watched the demonstrations of fighter planes and helicopters.
Most spectators had to make a long walk to reach the most promising spots on the Tschingelphorn and Axalphorn at more than 2200 meters above sea level. The army expected around four and a half thousand visitors on each of the two days of the demonstration on Wednesday and Thursday.
According to the statement, all Air Force assets participated in the flight demonstrations. The demonstrations serve as training on the one hand, but are also an opportunity to demonstrate your skills to the public on the other.
The annual aerial shooting goes back to General Henri Guisan, who was clearly dissatisfied in July 1942 when he attended an unannounced flying exercise in which the ammunition missed its targets on the ground by a wide margin.
The general’s orders were that the pilots should be better trained in ground combat in the mountains, as Markus Rieder writes in his book “Cleared Hot – the history of aerial shooting on the Axalp”. The army found an ideal training area for this in the Axalp area. Axalp is considered one of the world’s most demanding mountain fighter training areas.
Initially, annual screenings were held only for invited guests and selected journalists. But over time the event attracted more and more people. Nowadays, aviation fans travel from far away to take part in the aviation shooting competition on Axalp. Next year the air shooting competition at Axalp will be canceled in favor of the “Airspirit24” event. The air force will then demonstrate its capabilities at the military airfield in Emmen, Lucerne on August 30 and 31.
Up to 35,000 visitors are expected at “Airspirit24”, an army event involving the regional economy, politics and population. (SDA)
