Now the SVP is threatened with legal problems. Just a few days before the elections, the Eritrean Media Association and the ‘Left PoC’ association filed a criminal complaint against the SVP, as they wrote in a joint press release. They accuse the party of discrimination and incitement to hatred.
The background is the election campaign in which the SVP uses criminal cases involving foreigners as perpetrators and the slogan ‘New normality?’ advertises. The goal of the campaign is to portray members of the minority as criminal or dangerous, the complaint said: “This results in contempt and defamation.” The party systematically ignores crimes committed by Swiss citizens. “By doing so, it spreads a racist climate, which significantly increases discrimination against people affected by racism in Switzerland.”
Particularly explosive: the advertisement is aimed at the entire board of the SVP Switzerland. The two SVP federal council members Albert Rösti (56) and Guy Parmelin (63) are also members there. There is no immunity for statements made during the election campaign, according to the press release.
It is not the first time that the SVP campaign has come under criticism. A few weeks ago, the Federal Commission against Racism, led by President Martine Brunschwig Graf (73), criticized the campaign. “The topics are not only racist and xenophobic, but they are inflammatory and deliberately arouse negative emotions.” In a letter, she asked the party to remove the topics from the website and stop their distribution.
The SVP loudly rejected the committee’s allegations, warned of censorship and used the letter for its election campaign. It is “strange and scandalous” that the Commission intervenes in the election campaign and does not respect freedom of expression. “The SVP rejects this slander.” The campaign tackles documented cases.
