A new popular initiative gives a further boost to the election campaign of Corona skeptics and critics of the measures surrounding Mass-Voll boss Nicolas Rimoldi (28) and Constitutional Friends president Roland Bühlmann (51). Today marks the starting signal for the so-called sovereignty initiative. As the title promises, this is intended to ensure “effective protection of constitutional rights.” They want nothing less than to ‘save sovereignty’.

The initiative requires that Switzerland not enter into obligations under international law that require local authorities to intervene “in the area of ​​the protection of fundamental rights or other constitutional rights.” In particular, the initiators want to exclude “safety, economic, health or environmental regulations of a preventive or repressive nature”.

The initiators also do not want to be dictated by international courts when it comes to the application of the law. The only exception: the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court.

Terminate existing contracts if necessary

The initiators want existing obligations under international law to be subject to a reservation by Switzerland, if necessary, or to be terminated entirely. “Where possible, Switzerland makes reservations on individual provisions that exclude their validity in whole or in part or change their content,” according to the initiative text published in the Federal Government Gazette. And: “If such reservations are not permitted in a specific case, Switzerland will immediately terminate the underlying international treaty or withdraw from the relevant international organization or supranational community.”

But here the initiators mention a whole series of exceptions to which the requirements may not be applied: for example, the human rights treaty, international treaties in the transport sector, non-military UN sanctions or mandatory provisions of international law.

Corona skeptics have already held three referendums

The 27-member initiative committee not only includes figureheads of the critics of the measures, but also the SVP country council members Lukas Reimann (41, SG), Andreas Glarner (61, AG) and Jean-Luc Addor (59, US) concerned. . The same applies to EDU national councilor Andreas Gafner (52, BE) and Lega national councilor Lorenzi Quadri (48, TI).

It is not the first time that Corona skeptics have relied on people’s rights to act against the established forces in Federal Bern. You have already launched several referendums. For example, an anti-vaccination initiative is currently being discussed in parliament and signatures are still being collected for a revision initiative. They have already held referendums against the Covid-19 law three times, but have always failed in the eyes of the electorate.
