SP calls for binding Federal Council electricity saving target

Saving electricity is currently voluntary. The SP fears that this will probably not be enough.

The Federal Council must force the economy to reduce consumption by 5 percent, SP party leader Roger Nordmann (49) calls in an interview with the “Tamedia” newspapers. Everywhere, 5 percent could be saved relatively painlessly. This reduces the chance that painful measures such as quotas will be necessary.

In a normal winter six months, Switzerland has to import between 12 and 15 percent of its electricity, Nordmann says. That’s 4 to 5 terawatt hours. It is not certain that Switzerland can import so much electricity.

“Switzerland is well prepared”

Due to the lack of gas, there will be a lack of electricity in Europe. As for France, he is not as optimistic as President Emmanuel Macron. The French nuclear power plants are sick.

Switzerland is well prepared to produce additional electricity. Photovoltaic energy and emergency power generators can contribute to this. In this way, approximately 4 percent of the electricity needs can be covered. Then another 8 to 10 percent would have to be imported.

Federal councilor Guy Parmelin must now finally move on, Nordmann said. He must submit the regulations to the Federal Council, which regulates the procedure in the event of a power failure. The Federal Council must not only regulate the crisis, but also set a binding savings target, as the EU has done.

It is important that companies know as soon as possible what to prepare for. A certain lead time is required for the companies to be able to organize themselves. Everyone waited for the decree. It’s a mystery to him why this is still not available. (SDA)
