Media conference at 2 p.m.: Evi Allemann competes with SP men

Five men have already positioned themselves. Now the first woman is participating in the race. Bernese justice director Evi Allemann (45) invited people to a media conference on Monday afternoon.

It is clear that she is not calling the media representatives to announce her cancellation. She is also supported by the chairman of the SP of the canton of Bern and the chairman of the SP section Bern-Nord. This is also a sure sign of what the media conference is about.

It’s the second attempt

Allemann has been a government councilor in the canton of Bern since 2018; before that she served on the National Council for a long time. A year ago she stood as successor to the retiring SP federal councilor Simonetta Sommaruga (63). In the SP’s internal debate, she lost to Basel state councilor Eva Herzog (61) and Jura resident Elisabeth Baume-Schneider (59), who surprisingly became the election winner.

This time the Bernese woman was able to get the ticket. It is likely that she will remain the only woman competing. The SP women may have agreed to stand as candidates to increase the chance that one of the two or three candidates will be a woman.

Allemann’s competitors so far are the Zurich state councilor Daniel Jositsch (58), the Bernese national councilor Matthias Aebischer (55), the Basel government president Beat Jans (59), the Graubünden national councilor Jon Pult (39) and the former SP MP group leader Roger Nordmann (50), from Vaud. Other interested parties for the Federal Council office have until October 29 to get in touch. On November 25, the SP will decide who it will nominate to the Federal Assembly for election on December 13. (lha)
