The Federal Statistical Office (BFS) published the criminal statistics for adults on Monday. In 2020, the number of convictions fell sharply due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2022 they increased compared to 2021, but remained 4 percent below the 2019 level. At the end of last year, a total of 103,156 convictions were in the criminal record.

There was a 3 percent increase in Criminal Code violations, with a 13 percent increase in theft and a 44 percent increase in forgery. The downward trend in narcotics trafficking continued with a decline of 13 percent compared to 2021.

The Road Traffic Act has increased criminal convictions for driving under the influence (alcohol, drugs, medication). They increased by 18 percent compared to the previous year. Driving under the influence was particularly noticeable, with an increase of 25 percent. After a decline in 2020, the 2019 level was reached again.

Penalties for serious violations of traffic rules – especially speeding – increased by 4 percent. That is 6 percent less than in 2019.

The courts imposed expulsions from the country in 1945. More than half said this had been the case for more than five years. 34 percent of those convicted were EU nationals. In judgments in which the law provides for mandatory deportation from the country, this was imposed in 58 percent. This is a decrease of 2 percentage points compared to 2021.

Since the broader reauthorization of prison sentences of less than six months in 2018, the number of suspended short-term prison sentences has increased by 21 percent between 2021 and 2022 alone. Despite the appeal, sentences of short, unconditional prison sentences fell by 3 percent.
