An SRF program ridicules exhausted Loki leaders, reports on “shitty toilets in the Federal Palace” and describes the chocolatier Jürg Läderach (72) as a “wanker”. What’s going on there?
The question arises because the SRG is mainly financed through fees. And because the media company is obliged to provide a public service. This means: SRG must contribute to education, cultural development, opinion formation and entertainment.
A broad mandate, because entertainment is especially subjective. What does SRG mean by this? The online satire format “Studio 404” provides information.
An example: comedian Jozo Brica makes jokes about train drivers. Why? Because they have complained about suffering from increasing sensory overload in the digitalized operator cabins. Therefore, they are often tired and exhausted after work. Then the comedian shouts: “That is the meaning of work!” Your predecessors on the train should have shoveled coal. The tenor is unmistakable: stop whining!
The fact that SRF is ridiculing the tired drivers who are responsible for the safety of travelers is not well received by the public. “It’s funny when influencers explain what strict work is,” someone wrote in the comments section. Or: “We pay costs for that?”
Another video from Studio 404 is called “Gaggi Alarm in the Federal Palace”. Comedian Jenna Meichtry has something important to say in it: “Apparently the toilets in the Federal Palace are worthless.” And she’s on a hot streak: “Who’s responsible for this?”
Studio 404 has even more in store. In a post, comedian Mateo Gudenrath talks about chocolatier Jürg Läderach and finally says: “Sell chocolate all your life and remain a wanker.”
Are insults seen as a public service? Of course not, says SVP Councilor Gregor Rutz (51). In any case, the SRG may not produce online formats. He says about Studio 404: “The contributions are of poor quality and content.” The subject setting is not only embarrassing, but also extremely transgressive. “It offers no added value and is not entertaining.”
Rutz is on the committee of the halving initiative, which aims to reduce the radio and TV tax for households – from 335 to 200 francs. The SRG’s resources would be cut. But that is not the only goal of the initiators. You want to start a debate about public services. For Rutz, one point is already clear: “Such online formats must be stopped immediately.”
The SRG sees it differently. “The mandate says that we must offer offers for all age groups,” says Matthias Püntener, head of youth projects. The Studio 404 format mainly serves to entertain young people who are difficult to reach on other channels. This takes satire to the extreme. And: “We sometimes consciously go where it hurts.”
“Entertaining young people” comes at a high price. Studio 404 has an annual budget of 400,000 francs. The formula employs 15 people and the team is constantly expanding. Is that in the interest of taxpayers? They can make a decision on this in early 2025. Then the halving initiative should come to the attention of the people.
