After the concert was canceled due to Rasta hairstyle: racial discrimination! Criminal injunction against Brasserie Lorraine

The Bernese brasserie Lorraine was criticized in the summer of 2022.

It was a scandal. A year ago in the summer, the trendy Bernese Brasserie Lorraine canceled a concert by the reggae band Lauwarm. The musicians wore African dresses and two band members wore dreadlocks. After guests expressed their discomfort about this, the restaurant owner canceled the concert. The accusation: ‘Cultural appropriation.’ And the summer farce that caused a furor across national borders was perfect.

The incident was also politically exploited. The young SVP Switzerland filed a complaint for racial discrimination. Now it is clear: the young politicians were successful. The Bern public prosecutor’s office has issued a criminal warrant, spokesman Christof Scheurer confirmed this in the “Berner Zeitung”. Nothing could be found out about the reasons or the punishment itself, because the operators objected. The cancellation of the concert will be a matter for the jury.

Band does not feel discriminated against

The “Berner Zeitung” could not be reached for comment in Brasserie Lorraine until Thursday.

The band itself does not feel like a victim of racial discrimination. They distance themselves from the party. “We always felt that a complaint was an exaggerated and ineffective measure.”

Punishment unclear

In the newspaper, head of strategy Nils Fiechter (27) welcomed the decision. It was precisely the SVP who otherwise demonized the punishment standard against racism. Fiechter says he still thinks criminal law is a “complete joke.” “Innocent citizens are being silenced as a result.”

Racial discrimination can in theory be punished with up to three years in prison. That probably won’t be the case here; on the contrary, a conditional fine can be assumed. As was the case in the spring of 2022, when Fiechter and his then co-chairman of the Young SVP Bern, Adrian Spahr (29), were themselves convicted of racial discrimination. They were given suspended fines of 30 daily rates each. (brother)
