Successor to federal councilor Berset: The population would vote for Jositsch, the SP base would not

As is known, the elections for the Federal Council are not popular elections. But if the population were to decide who would succeed SP federal councilor Alain Berset (51), the matter would be clear: Zurich’s state councilor, Daniel Jositsch (58).

At least that is evident from a survey by Tamedia and ’20 Minutes’ among more than 29,000 people. 27 percent of respondents are in favor of Jositsch as the second SP federal councilor next to Elisabeth Baume-Schneider (59). Comrade Pierre-Yves Maillard (55) from Vaud and the Bernese national councilor Matthias Aebischer (55) follow in second place – far behind – and receive 9 percent of the votes. Maillard has not yet announced his candidacy. It is unlikely, as Maillard is currently in the middle of the election campaign for the Council of States.

SP supporters would vote differently

Basel’s state councilor Eva Herzog would give 7 percent of her votes, although she has now taken herself out of the running. The survey was conducted on September 19 and 20. At the moment, only 4 and 3 percent respectively would have voted for the Graubünden federal councilor Jon Pult (38) or for Basel district president Beat Jans (59). And the fifth candidate in the group, ex-SP faction leader Roger Nordmann (50), gets 2 percent. Pult, Jans and Nordmann only announced their candidacy after the survey.

The interesting thing is that if you just look at the SP sympathizers, the result looks very different. Daniel Jositsch is significantly less popular among the SP base than in other circles. Only 15 percent of SP voters would vote for him. However, Pierre-Yves Maillard, president of the Swiss Federation of Trade Unions, has 16 percent. Jon Pult is also much more popular among SP supporters, as are Tamara Funiciello (33) from Bern and the two co-chairmen of the SP, Mattea Meyer (35) and Cédric Wermuth (37). These three have not yet announced their candidacy.

Interested comrades must submit their candidacy before October 29, one week after the federal elections. It can be assumed that at least one more woman will participate in the race. The Bernese government councilor Evi Allemann (45) is considered the favorite. It is unclear how much support they have among the SP base. The September Tamedia survey did not ask for your name.
