The Swiss are stuck in Israel: the federal government does not want to carry out evacuation flights

Flight operations at Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport are currently limited.

The Swiss in Israel must try to find safety from the war that has broken out on their own. The federal government has no plans to help its citizens leave the country. When asked by Blick, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (EDA) stated that it is not conducting organized departures from Israel.

Those affected have no choice but to hope to catch a flight at Tel Aviv airport. However, Swiss has suspended flight operations between Israel and Switzerland until Monday. One possibility would be for other countries to operate repatriation flights. If this is the case and if Swiss nationals are allowed to fly with you, you will be notified, the FDFA said. Anyone registered with the Swiss Embassy in Tel Aviv or registered in the FDFA’s “Travel Admin App” will receive the information.

The federal government is failing Swiss Jews

Jonathan Kreutner, secretary general of the Swiss Association of Jewish Communities (SIG), accuses the association of allowing Swiss Jews to hang. Many Swiss were currently in Israel not only for the autumn holidays, but also for Jewish holidays. “Many people have no way to leave the country,” Kreutner told Blick.

“Some of them live in apartments and houses without shelter, and many of them travel with children.” He expects support from official Switzerland.

The message remains open

When asked, the FDFA writes that the Swiss embassy in Tel Aviv and the representation in Ramallah are still in operation. They would answer questions from Swiss citizens and be in contact with the responsible local authorities. Anyone who needs support or is in an emergency situation can contact the embassy or the FDFA hotline.

The federal government currently has no information about Swiss victims. There are currently approximately 28,000 Swiss citizens living in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories. It is unclear how many tourists and guests from Switzerland are currently in Israel. About 240 people have registered via Travelapp. (lha)
