New research into the SRG’s halving initiative: majority wants to pay less for radio and TV

The SRG halving initiative “200 francs is enough!” wants to reduce TV and radio rates for private individuals. It also calls for the complete abolition of the fee for companies. Representatives of the SVP, the trade association and the Young Liberals submitted the initiative in August.

General director of SRG Gilles Marchand (61) described the initiative in an interview with SonntagsBlick in August as an “attack on Switzerland and its diversity”. She is dangerous to the entire media space.

Nine out of ten SVP members say yes

But now it is clear that the anti-SRG initiative is being well received in its initial phase. 61 percent of the Swiss electorate supports the cause. According to a survey by Tamedia, only 36 percent reject the initiative.

Nine out of ten SVP voters say yes to the initiative. That’s not surprising. Only: the approval extends to the political center. FDP and centrist exponents also agree with the concerns.

The Leewas Institute conducted the online research on behalf of “20 Minutes” and Tamedia. Leewas political scientist Fabio Wasserfallen said of the results that high approval rates were not unusual at this early stage: “Many initiatives have achieved a majority of 60 percent or more in surveys, but were ultimately rejected.”

SRG doubts whether those interviewed are aware of the consequences

The ‘Alliance for Media Diversity’ seems calm for the time being about the results of the research. She is against the halving initiative and in favor of strong SRH and media diversity. FDP State Council Damian Müller (38), part of the co-presidium, says “20 Minutes”: In the “No Billag” initiative, the yes share in the first survey was 57 percent – ​​but in the end the popular initiative was more than 70 percent percent were rejected. And Müller is also sure: “If people realize what they lose if they say yes, they will switch to the no camp.”

The SRG takes note of the investigation, writes the title of Tamedia. However, it is doubtful “that the respondents are actually already aware of the scale and consequences of the halving of the SRG”.
