He is one of the most influential SVP politicians in parliament: Zug councilor Thomas Aeschi (44). The SVP faction leader kept his private life secret for a long time. But he recently revealed: his partner Valeria Geissbühler (32) and he are engaged and will become parents next year.
On Wednesday evening, the two appeared together in public for the first time – in Tele Züri’s program “TalkTäglich”.
The two talk about how they met four years ago at an SVP election campaign event in Sattel SZ. “Of course I noticed Valeria,” says Aeschi enthusiastically. At some point the two wrote to each other and met. After regularly walking and eating together, a partnership finally emerged in 2020.
However, Aeschi and Geissbühler must overcome some organizational hurdles to maintain their relationship. Because: Geissbühler lives in Schübelbach SZ, where he politicizes for the SVP in the municipal council. “I have my fitness membership there, have many friends there and am active in clubs,” she explains. And Aeschi also travels a lot as a Zug national councilor and parliamentary group leader of the Sünneli party.
Geissbühler said she could even imagine a family model in which she would continue to live in Schübelbach and Aeschi in Zug. “Why not?” Their child will then certainly be cared for partly by her parents and partly by Aeschi’s parents. And Aeschi adds: “Maybe I should think about a daddy day in the future.” Not necessarily the classic family model that the two strive for.
“Valeria is a very strong person, she knows what she wants,” Aeschi answers when asked what fascinates him so much about his partner. For example, he was impressed by the fact that she traveled alone to Africa as a young woman. Geissbühler immediately returns the flowers and describes Aeschi as a trustworthy gentleman. But: “He is politically similar to how he is in his private life: he makes an effort when he likes something.”
Aeschi’s marriage proposal was very romantic, Geissbühler remembers. Aeschi proposed to her in a Greek theater in Sicily. “Many of the dreams you have as a woman have come true,” she says. It’s one of the best things to hear someone tell you that you are the person you want to spend your life with.
Will Geissbühler also have a dream wedding in white? “Many women have such a princess dream,” she admits, laughing. But it will certainly be “somewhat down to earth”. White will still be a problem.
They are both not sure whether the descendants of the SVP political couple will one day be called Magdalena or Christoph. (oko)
