Despite the absence of mediation talks: Berset positive balance after the European summit

You cannot expect that problems will be solved with a format like the European Political Community (EPC), Berset told the media on Thursday after the meeting in southern Spain. “You can’t expect miracles.”

It was originally hoped that something could be achieved diplomatically on the sidelines of the summit between Serbia and Kosovo and between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Ultimately, however, no meetings took place between the feuding states.

Berset still did not want to know about the failure of the summit. To find solutions we need the political will to sit down at the table and talk to each other. Then a platform like the EPC is useful. And that is exactly what “legitimizes this format”, according to the Federal Council.

The Federal President continued that these meetings are also important for Switzerland to maintain informal contacts. You never know whether a contact will suddenly turn out to be ‘very important’ in five years’ time.

Accordingly, the Federal President exchanged views with numerous heads of state and government. He had official bilateral meetings with Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar, President of Montenegro Jakov Milatovic and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. (SDA)
