The Tourism Poland exhibition posters in the embassy residence are a thorn in the side of the Bernese authorities.

Poland promotes its country with tourist posters on the fence of its embassy residence in Bern. The beautiful landscape images were intended to bring Poland closer to the people of Bern and build new bridges between the two countries. The “exhibition” is also a gesture to the local residents. It serves as inspiration and an invitation to Poland.

However, authorities in the city of Bern find: “It doesn’t work at all” and claim a violation of applicable law.

“A beautiful country, but…”

“Poland is a beautiful country that I have traveled to several times and that I can only recommend,” the responsible city councilor Reto Nause (52, center) told the Keystone-SDA news agency on Thursday. “Yet the municipal advertising rules and cantonal regulations also apply to embassies.”

The legal situation is clear. “Advertisements for this type of advertising on the fence cannot be approved. We will pass this on to the Polish embassy.”

Thanks to a report by Radio SRF, the posters became public. The Polish embassy said in a statement that the posters had been hanging on the outside fence of the house in Elfenau for a year. It received an extremely positive response from the residents of Bern. If a building permit is required for the posters, the Polish state will then apply for one.

Inspired by the Swiss Embassy in Warsaw

According to her own statements, Ambassador Iwona Kozlowska (53) was inspired by the Swiss embassy in Warsaw. This has hung advertising posters for Switzerland on the fence at a prime location.

The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs (EDA) admitted upon request that it had not received permission for this from the Warsaw authorities. “Attaching posters to embassy fences is practiced by numerous embassies in Warsaw,” an EDA spokesperson said. So far there has been no objection from the city of Warsaw.

According to SRF, there are other embassies in Bern that have mounted posters on their fences. If the city becomes aware of further cases, “we will take immediate action and inform these embassies of the applicable regulations,” said city councilor Nause. (SDA/oco)
