The Bundesplatz in Bern is currently closed. Reason: a suspicious object.

The Bundesplatz in Bern is currently closed to passenger traffic. The reason for this is that the special service of the Bern cantonal police was deployed due to a suspicious object. A media spokeswoman for the Bern cantonal police confirmed this when asked by Blick. She could not say anything about the duration of the ban.

The Bundesgasse is currently not accessible and public transport is being diverted.

Regular activities on the Bundesplatz

For this reason, the Bundesplatz was closed a year ago. A suspicious object was also found at that time. The police used a bomb robot. The footage shows him picking up a black backpack and driving away with it.

The police then examined the suspect backpack remotely using a scanner. This was later checked by the officials. In the evening, the Bern police were able to give the signal: “After checking by our specialists, the item turned out to be harmless,” the officers said.

The rapid test came back positive for explosives

Another, much more threatening incident took place in February: a man in a combat uniform tried to break into the Federal Palace through the Federal Terrace. A Blick employee took a photo of him at the back entrance. The guards stopped the man.

It later emerged that the mentally unstable man had parked a Jaguar S-Type in the middle of the Bundesplatz and turned on the emergency lights. The security forces have cordoned off everything. The evacuated buildings included the parliament building and the east and west wings of the Federal Palace. The front part of the National Bank building, as well as the Valiant Bank and the Berner Kantonalbank were further evacuated.

The reason: When the man, who appeared to be wearing a protective vest and a gun holster, was checked, a rapid test showed positive for explosives, as the cantonal police of Bern later announced. The car was inspected for hours by explosives experts.
