The number of asylum applications in Switzerland increased by 635 in September to 2,681 applications compared to August. The main countries of origin were Afghanistan and Turkey. 2,877 people who fled Ukraine were granted S protection status.
Compared to September 2021, the number of asylum applications has increased by 1138, the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) led by Christine Schraner Burgener (59) announced on Tuesday. In addition, in the reporting month, the SEM refused protection status S to 83 persons from Ukraine who sought protection because the criteria were not met. At the end of September, 59,988 people had S status.
Afghanistan and Turkey
The main countries of origin of asylum seekers in September were Afghanistan with 824 applications (+267 compared to August), Turkey with 544 applications (+173), Syria with 180 applications (+84), Eritrea with 149 applications (-35) and Algeria with 141 applications (–2).
The SEM processed asylum applications in September 1724. It took 550 refusal decisions, 438 of which because those affected had already applied for asylum in another Dublin state. 468 people were granted asylum and 431 temporary admission. The number of initially pending applications rose by 1,032 to 7,904 in August.
A total of 16,500 requests
Five people traveled to Switzerland in September for urgent medical reasons. In September, 60 people entered Switzerland as part of the resumption of the resettlement program (resettlement of particularly vulnerable refugees).
For this year, the SEM expects about 16,500 asylum applications. In 2021 Switzerland registered just under 15,000 applications. However, this year there are some 60,000 war refugees from Ukraine with protection status S, some of whom will live with host families. Depending on the development of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine, the number of Ukrainians who need protection in the cold season could again increase sharply. (SDA/pt)
As the Federal Bureau of Customs and Border Security announced Tuesday, the number of illegal stays rose to 6,659 in September, more than 800 more than in the previous month.
The somewhat more moderate increase is mainly due to illegal border crossings via the eastern and southern borders in Ticino. The migrants detained in Switzerland mainly come from Afghanistan and North Africa.
In total, more than 30,000 seizures were registered this year. Already significantly more than in the whole of last year with almost 19,000 cases. (SDA/rus)
