It’s a stage victory. Thomas Bruchez, vice president of Juso Switzerland, is satisfied. The ‘Initiative for a Future’ has reached the milestone of 100,000 signatures, he tells Blick.

However, you should not be lazy. The Juso party leadership says that around 30,000 more signatures need to be collected over the next two months – because some of the signatures appear to be invalid. The focus is mainly on the national climate demonstration on September 30.

The initiative, launched by Juso and mainly supported by the parent party and the Young Greens, is expected to be submitted on February 16, 2024. The signature collection should be completed by mid-November.

One quarter tax, three quarters for the heirs

The initiative text calls for “a social climate policy that is fairly financed through taxes”. This means asking the super-rich to pay. In the form of an inheritance and gift tax of 50 percent on inheritances with an exemption amount of 50 million francs or more.

According to Bruchez, the ‘social climate policy’ should mainly affect these three areas: work, housing, public transport. The latter mainly concerns the financing of affordable public transport. In the residential construction sector, the goal is to build environmentally friendly buildings and renovations without increasing rental prices. And in the field of work, the initiators want to promote ‘low-emission professions’, such as nursing professions, more in the future.
