Kosovo aims to become a member of the Council of Europe next year, as Kurti said in an interview with the “Neue Zürcher Zeitung” published on Friday. First of all, it is about geopolitics. The Brics countries, i.e. Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, would not recognize Kosovo. “We need Switzerland’s support,” Kurti said. The interview was conducted after his meeting with Federal President Alain Berset a week ago.

Switzerland supports Kosovo’s desired admission to the Council of Europe, as the Federal Ministry of the Interior (EDI) announced after the meeting. The inclusion would allow all residents of the country – including members of the Serbian minority – to have access to the European Court of Human Rights.

Berset called for the implementation of agreements

After the meeting, Berset called on Kosovo and Serbia to implement the Brussels and Ohrid agreements negotiated in the spring. They are intended to contribute to the normalization of relations between the two countries. According to the EDI, Berset emphasized Switzerland’s support in the standardization process.

Two days after the meeting, heavy fighting broke out in Serb-inhabited northern Kosovo. “There will be a before and an after September 24,” Kurti said in the interview.

The Swiss Foreign Ministry has condemned the attack on Kosovo police “in the strongest possible terms”. It called for calm and restraint. Those responsible for this act of violence must be held accountable.
