Baume-Schneider optimistic: agreement on EU asylum crisis mechanism possible

class=”sc-29f61514-0 icZBHN”>

Federal Councilor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider hopes on Thursday in Brussels for a speedy resolution of the dispute over the EU crisis mechanism in the asylum sector. (Archive)

There is an urgent need to “find a common answer,” the federal councilor told journalists in Brussels. Politicians have a great responsibility, she said regarding the situation in Lampedusa, Italy.

Originally, the crisis mechanism was only on the ministers’ agenda as an information point. But time is of the essence if the EU wants to finalize the asylum package before the European elections in June 2024.

It is currently unclear what impact this mechanism will have on Switzerland. But it is a paradigm shift, the federal councilor said. What is also certain is that it brings “more clarity”. (SDA)
