About 80 percent of candidates for the National Council and the Council of States spoke out in the Smartvote survey in favor of a ban on facial recognition in public spaces, as the alliance ‘Protect Fundamental Rights – Stop Facial Recognition’ of non-governmental organizations has announced on Wednesday.

Among the candidates for the National Council, 77.9 percent said yes or rather yes to the ban, and 83.9 percent for the Council of States. 52.7 percent of the National Council and 55.2 percent of the Council of States were clearly in favor of a ban.

77.4 percent of National Council members running for re-election supported the ban, while in the Council of States the figure was 75.8 percent. Approval ranged from 90 percent for the Greens to over 60 percent for both the FDP and the Center. Only the SVP candidates spoke out against a ban, only 51.5 percent.

The alliance includes the Swiss chapter of Amnesty International, Algorithmwatch CH and Digitale Gesellschaft. 180 civil society organizations are calling for a global ban on biometric mass surveillance in public spaces.
