Maria Wegenin wants to go to the Federal Palace. The 44-year-old is already chairman of the SVP Winterthur and is now standing as a candidate for the National Council. On her social media profiles, she stokes anti-migrant sentiment and spreads propaganda slogans such as: “Foreign infiltration must be stopped!”, “Border protection is domestic security” and “Act now or perish.”
The slogans did not come from her. Research shows: The right-wing extremist group Junge Tat is behind Wegelin’s election campaign.
SonntagsBlick reviewed video footage, conducted language comparisons and spoke to insiders. The results leave no doubt: the right-wing extremists produce Wegelin’s campaign videos and manage a number of her social media accounts. Insiders confirm: Junge Tat took over “media work”.
Tobias L.* (21), one of the two leaders of the group, manages Swegelin’s profile on the short-message service X (formerly Twitter). He posts xenophobic slogans and right-wing propaganda under his client’s name. No coincidence: a week ago an advertisement for Nemesis Switzerland, a right-wing extremist women’s organization that has close ties to Junge Tat, appeared on Wegelin’s channel.
Since the beginning of September, the SVP politician has published several clips from the election campaign. In it she rails against leftists, migrants and feminists. The videos were produced by the head of Junge Tat: Manuel C.* (23), who runs a small design company in Winterthur.
C. studied scientific visualization at the Kunsthochschule Zurich until the management of the ZHdK threw him out in 2020. Reason: He disrupted an online lecture by shouting “Heil Hitler!” The public prosecutor has convicted C. for hatred of Jews. Shortly afterwards he founded Junge Tat. Thanks to Instagram-friendly campaigns and professionally produced propaganda videos, the group has thousands of followers online. Recently, the EU police authority Europol warned about its new communication strategy, from which National Council candidate Wegelin would now also like to benefit.
With his new-right, hip appearance and eager distance from National Socialism, Junge Tat succeeds in making right-wing extremism attractive to young people. The group is anything but harmless: the Federal Intelligence Service (NDB) keeps an eye on them and the police have repeatedly taken action against Junge Tat members. Wegenin’s election workers Tobias L. and Manuel C. were temporarily arrested several times. Officials even seized weapons during house searches.
Just three weeks ago, police officers in Germany and Switzerland raided the right-wing extremist scene. The law enforcement officers also had L. and C. in their sights, whose apartments were also searched. German justice is investigating the two for incitement and coercion because they marched in front of an asylum center in Peutenhausen, Bavaria, wearing masks in February, blocking the road and setting off smoke bombs. Junge Tat maintains close relations with neo-Nazis abroad.
How does an SVP cadre come up with the idea of making a pact with the militant right-wing extremists? How much money does she pay them and share their opinions? Confronted with the research results of SonntagsBlick, Wegelin is silent. She absolutely does not want to be quoted; after a brief email exchange she disappears.
Wegenin is no stranger to this. During the pandemic, she gained national fame as an opponent of measures. The trained veterinarian appeared at Corona demonstrations and criticized the vaccination. In September 2021, she quit her job at the Technorama Science Center in Winterthur because she did not want to subject herself to her employer’s Corona rules. She then complained in the ‘NZZ’: ‘The media reduces me to Corona.’
At the same time there was a bang in the Winterthur SVP section. Wegenin’s then campaign manager, who was also vice president of the party, resigned from all his positions and resigned from the party – partly because of Wegelin’s views.
Now the president has brought Junge Tat on board. Actually, the connection should remain secret, the SVP woman knows how explosive the collaboration is. Tobias L. recently hinted at the delicate collaboration when he was a guest in an online broadcast by right-wing extremist Ignaz Bearth.
When asked about the potential of artificial intelligence for his activism, he said: “I work very intensively with it because I certainly work… I’m not allowed to say much about it because I do media work for people.”
A few days later, AI-generated images appeared on Mariawegelin’s social media profiles.
