Federal Councilor Karin Keller-Sutter provides insight into her daily professional life.

Preparation for the Federal Council meeting, internal briefings, meetings, business lunches – Finance Minister Karin Keller-Sutter (59) does not have a time clock. Working days of 12 to 14 hours are not unusual for the federal councilor.

In the podcast ‘Call the Boss’ from ‘Schaffhauser Nachrichten’, Keller-Sutter (59) gives an unusually open and rare insight into her daily work life.

Long evenings cost energy

According to the judge, in order to cope with the enormous workload, you need a certain degree of self-discipline and you must be able to handle yourself. “You have to learn to distinguish yourself, set priorities and be aware that you cannot always do everything.”

For example, she makes sure that she always gets enough sleep, which is important to her. She receives a lot of invitations to evening events, which would be very nice. Simply: “I’m not a fan of long evenings,” she says. Because this would cost them a lot of strength and energy.

Although she enjoys her work, she has also had motivational crises, the Finance Minister admits. “There are problems of which you think: now they are coming back and they are still not solved.”

Do ‘ice cream for the other person’.

These are challenging times when many topics determine events simultaneously. Then all she has to do is say to herself, “No matter what.”

In the podcast she also talks about the memorable Sunday last March. When the Federal Council made history and announced the takeover of Credit Suisse (CS) by UBS. In the middle of the storm: Finance Minister Keller-Sutter.

After the media conference where she had to announce the end of the CS, she went home and had something to eat. Later she went to bed and when she woke up Monday morning, she thought it was finally the weekend.

Boxing training once a week

In order to relax after such tough weeks in Bern, she likes to go home to Eastern Switzerland on weekends to meet colleagues and family – that is very important to her. “I need this spatial distance from Bern,” she explains.

Finally, Keller-Sutter says she goes boxing once a week. “That is sacred to me,” she explains. Because: “This is the hour in which I can completely relax.” (oko)
