According to the military, an incident involving an army helicopter occurred last Saturday while training for an air show in Roanne, France. A Super Puma was damaged when it spun on its own axis with its nose against the ground. The character is called “Screwdiver Down”.
The army has only informed us now because it took a while to read the data and only then did the scale of the incident become clearer, the army explained in response to a Blick question.
She won’t say exactly what is broken. However, the machine was so badly damaged, as an initial inspection showed, that the planned helicopter show had to be cancelled.
No one was injured. The two pilots of the helicopter were able to immediately correct the unusual deviation from the intended flight and land the aircraft at the intended location.
The military justice system has opened an investigation. The Air Force Aviation Safety Division is also investigating the incident. The army cannot yet say how much damage has been caused. The helicopter is currently in France and is being prepared for return transport. Until the investigation is completed, the screwdriver figure will not be used in subsequent flight demonstrations for safety reasons. (lha/ma’am)
