The initiative committee announced on its website on Friday that it has currently received 101,615 signatures. 83,360 signatures have been certified. For a popular initiative to go to the polls, 100,000 valid signatures are needed in Switzerland.
A certain percentage of signatures are invalid – often around ten percent, sometimes more.
When asked on Friday, Corinne Meister of the initiative committee said that they would continue to actively collect. People kept signing twice. The committee plans to present the initiative to Bern at the end of October. The initiators must stop collecting signatures as of November 3.
The signature collection started in May last year. The aim of the initiative is to ensure that private individuals are no longer allowed to set off loud fireworks on August 1 and New Year’s Eve. This is to protect people and animals from loud noise.
The initiators only want to allow loud fireworks on national occasions. The committee says it is supported by environmental and animal welfare organizations. These include Swiss Animal Protection (STS), Wildlife Protection Switzerland, Animal in Law Foundation, Swiss Cynological Society, Pro Natura, Greenpeace Switzerland and the Noise League. (SDA)
