Thomas Matter attacked in Winterthur: SVP National Councilor showered with drink by demonstrator

SVP Councilor Thomas Matter (57) is talking to demonstrators when a man with a drink in his hand runs up to him and quickly pours it in his face. The matter turns away, but captures the entire contents of the glass.

This is evident from a video recorded by the private broadcaster “TeleZüri” in Winterthur during an unauthorized meeting on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the “Tanz-dich-frei-Demo”.

“I wanted to say hello to Mattea Meyer”

Matter tells Sender that he was near Winterthur for another reason. Because he thought that SP politician Mattea Meyer was also at the demonstration, he wanted to “say hello” to her, he says.

The video also shows him stepping in front of the protesters and being rudely asked to leave by a woman. “Old woman, go away now,” the woman shouts.

He did not provoke

“I am no longer allowed to walk around in my own country,” Matter told “TeleZüri” afterwards. “The left always says they are tolerant. But it’s clearly the opposite.” He didn’t provoke the protesters; he had to walk through because he parked his car nearby.

The SVP Canton of Zurich immediately took over the attack, writing on X, formerly Twitter: “The SVP Canton of Zurich strongly condemns this cowardly, anti-democratic attack.” The party believes that the SP and the Greens must “finally distance themselves from extremism and violence in a credible manner”.

According to the broadcaster, Winterthur city police were on the scene and tolerated the demonstration “as long as it was peaceful.” (neo)
