The Council of States wants to strictly implement the adopted popular initiative ‘Children and young people without tobacco advertising’ at one central point. Advertising in press products should be banned. (archive image)

On Wednesday, the small chamber approved a central point of the Federal Council’s proposed tightening of the Tobacco Products Act. In concrete terms, advertising in press products should be prohibited unless they are primarily intended for the foreign market or exclusively for people working in the tobacco industry. The council decided this with 22 votes in favor, 17 votes in favor and 3 abstentions.

A centre-left majority prevailed. The provisional advisory committee wanted to weaken the ban. Advertising should continue to be allowed in publications that sell primarily to adults through subscriptions.

The proposal goes to the National Council.
