Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis (62) described the peace plan that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (45) wanted to present to the Security Council on Wednesday as an “interesting approach”. But: a peace plan that both parties do not agree with is not good enough, according to the Ticino resident.
‘One-sided peace plans cannot go far through violence alone. And we don’t want this conflict to become an even bigger war,” Cassis told media representatives in New York on Wednesday.
For the first time this year, Switzerland is also a member of the UN Security Council, the most powerful political body within the United Nations. Switzerland is currently represented at the so-called “High Level Week” by Federal President Alain Berset (51) Cassis.
In his speech to the UN on Tuesday, Berset denounced those who sought to promote “global disorder” for their benefit. Rather, what is needed is a renewed world order that guarantees stability, trust and common perspectives.
Also yesterday, Foreign Minister Cassis attended a meeting on the International Criminal Court where the crime of aggression was discussed. Switzerland welcomes the idea of a special tribunal for Ukraine, Cassis said.
The Foreign Minister also met in New York with Rafael Grossi (62), the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The two discussed, among other things, the protection of nuclear power plants against occupation or exploitation by military forces.
Cassis also said that Switzerland deeply regrets that renewed violence has broken out between Azerbaijan and Armenia over Nagorno-Karabakh. Switzerland had offered a hand in the armistice and peace negotiations.
In his talks in New York with his counterparts from Armenia and Azerbaijan, as well as Turkey and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), he will explore the issue of a peaceful solution to the conflict, the Federal Council said.
Environmental protection is also on the agenda of the Secretary of State in New York. He is taking part in a meeting on an international agreement to significantly reduce plastic pollution. The agreement is scheduled to enter into force in 2024.
Cassis also campaigns against arbitrary detention. These were contrary to international law, the Minister of Foreign Affairs said. The Federal Council also had numerous bilateral meetings, including with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken (61), who thanked Switzerland for its role in the prisoner exchange between Iran and the US.
