The Green Freiburg National Councilor Gerhard Andrey is a candidate for the Council of States in the federal elections in October 2023. This makes him the first left-wing politician to announce his ambitions in the canton of Friborg.
He is available for federal elections both as a candidate for the National Council and for the Council of States, Andrey said in an interview published Tuesday with the Friborg daily “La Liberté”.
FDP and Mitte keep chairs
The two seats in the Council of State are currently held by Mitte politician Isabelle Chassot and FDP politician Johanna Gapany. The left-wing parties representing the canton of Friborg in the Council of State are currently under-represented. So are the representatives of the German language, says Andrey, who runs a company of German origin.
He supports the left-wing alliance of the Greens and the center-left CSP Freiburg, which have decided to nominate a representative from each party as a candidate for the first round of elections to the Council of States. The person who received the most votes in the first ballot may participate in the second round.
It is important to show the people of Freiburg that the left-wing parties have a wide range of candidates, Andrey said.
SP lost seat last year
The Freiburger SP lost its seat in the Council of States in the September 26, 2021 elections after Christian Levrat resigned and moved to the post as chairman of the board. The socialist Carl-Alex Ridoré was inferior to Chassot at the time. (SDA)
